When did your love of STEM begin?
My love for STEM began when I was a kid when my father bought me my first computer. I did not know anyone who had one at the time but my school did. The grade eight teacher allowed me to stay in recesses and lunches so he could teach me how to use it. I wanted to peruse a career in the field but I was told that the market was flooded at the time and I'd never get a job. I was encouraged to get into healthcare which I did and for most of my adult life working in Pediatric Oncology. When my children were grown I struggled with the whole idea of what am I going to be when I grow up? I enjoyed my job but I always felt I was missing my calling. When I made the decision to go back to school it was scary and very eye opening. I was not prepared for the feeling of not belonging or not valued. I was blessed to be part of Mohawk College's group Women in Technology and Trade (WiTT). This group changed my life, I was provided with support and mentorship and given the confidence to know I can do anything I put my mind to.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
Working in STEM for me is so rewarding, my biggest joy is solving problems and I get to do that every day.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
Never let anyone tell you you can't do something. It doesn't matter your age, your gender or your ethnicity. The first CM&E conference I attended I heard "If you can see me, you can be me", it is so true and together we can show the world women are capable of anything we put our mind to.
