When did your love of STEM begin?

In the fourth grade, I was tasked with inventing something. I got so excited realizing I could create something that could change the world and better people's lives. My love and interest for STEM expanded throughout middle school and high school. I have always been interested in how things work and design. This pushed me towards STEM and engineering. As I was touring colleges my senior year, I was nervous about choosing a STEM career. While on the tour, I walked into a lab class where the students were operating robots. I instantly fell in love! Ever since that day I knew I wanted to work in an engineering field.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The best part of being in STEM is the adventure. Every day is different. You don't know what kind of problem or opportunity will arise. As an engineer, I do a lot of troubleshooting. I look at troubleshooting as a mystery to find the root cause of the problem. Engineering gives me a chance to make improvements to the product by improving the product, the cycle time, production methods, and quality of the part. Currently in her position of work she is able to see a design from an idea to completion and feels it is rewarding to help change the world and connect people one bridge at a time.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

You can absolutely excel in STEM! When you go to college, create a group of women in STEM. A good support system is invaluable to getting your education. Do what you love despite what others say or think. You can make a difference!
