When did your love of STEM begin?

Since elementary school, I have always enjoyed Math and Science. They were my favourite classes because there was always one right answer and I enjoyed how there was a process to solving problems. However, due to my love for dance, I first wanted to open my own dance studio growing up and be a dance teacher. My interests shifted as my grade 10 Science teacher had a meeting with me and encouraged me to look into Engineering. The more I looked into this field, the more I realized I was meant for it. It combines everything I love, Math, Science, collaboration, teamwork and leadership skills. Being able to apply knowledge learned in class to real world scenarios intrigued me. I also love the versatility of the program and the endless opportunities the degree provides you with.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

Although I am currently not working in the field of STEM, being a student and working in team projects has shown me the true benefits of collaboration. There is something special about Engineering and the people in it. There is an influential team aspect and the support you receive from your peers is one of the most special feelings. I love being able to feed off others energy and be inspired by our diverse and creative ideas. One of the greatest parts about being in STEM is the people and their mindset. My friends I have met in my program inspire me to be better and challenge myself everyday.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Being a young women in STEM myself, I would say go for it! Do not let your gender or stereotypical roles inhibit you from entering this field. Prove those who do not believe in you wrong and follow your passions. If you love it, go for it. I do not notice a difference in attitude in my classes towards women being in engineering. Although there is still more work to do, the STEM field has truly evolved and more and more women are becoming involved. Do not hesitate to join such an amazing community and field! You will forever be inspired.
