When did your love of STEM begin?
I was just a kid, probably 4 or 5 years old. My parents gave me illustrated encyclopedia about inventions– and I was so happy. I have read all the sections in the encyclopedia and asked to buy more books – I wanted to learn about animals, planets, lasers (gosh, I absolutely loved lasers!), etc. I also remember when I was 5 my godfather asked me who I want to be. I said that I want to be a master of poisons (I have not learned the word “pharmacist” yet). Long story short, and 22 years later I have ultimately become a “master of poisons”, earning a Ph.D. in chemistry.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
Endless opportunities. There is never a situation “I know everything, so now I am bored” because each answered scientific question raises new questions. Again, and again. STEM is about the creation of meaningful things that advance human knowledge.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
Try to connect with females in science. Don’t be afraid, because the truth is – there are a lot of adult women in STEM who want to help girls entering STEM.
