When did your love of STEM begin?
My first job out of University was at a digital startup which hadn't yet secured it's first customer. My first task was to help refresh our website and figure out how to communicate our value to potential clients. I loved the challenge of building an online presence, and have been passionate about creating valuable and frictionless customer experiences in the digital realm ever since. Now, i get excited & love how technology is a system, much like the human biology "systems' I studied in university. Finding the most intuitive and efficient process to run these systems is a challenge I never tire of meeting.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
STEM is always evolving. When I first started working, everyone had more experience than me, but in STEM, learning and staying current (and looking ahead) has been the most important skill, augmented by growing wisdom of experience from the journey. It's never dull, and for every new solution there are unmet needs and new challenges to address.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
Do what you love. Passion is everything in building a career you love, and we all benefit from diverse backgrounds and experiences on the teams working in this field. That is true of men and women, and also people coming into STEM careers from more traditional backgrounds as well as other areas provides unique context and perspective to solve the challenges of today and tomorrow.
