When did your love of STEM begin?

I first became interested in STEM when I was in elementary school. I often excelled in mathematics, but more importantly, I very much enjoyed learning the subject. My father, being an engineer himself, always encouraged me to further explore my love for math and science. When thinking of possible future career options for myself, I always felt that engineering was the way to go as it seemed to be a very satisfying combination of math and science.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The best part about working in the field of STEM are the opportunities that are available. Generally, concepts in STEM are applicable to many different applications. Therefore, your field of study does not restrict you and you can apply the knowledge/skills you've acquired to many different careers as well as various aspects of day-to-day life. I personally feel very fortunate for how STEM has broadened my future in terms of career prospects. Being in this field has positively changed how I approach various challenges I face in my every day life due to the skills and behaviours I have developed through my various stages of education.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Even if you feel like you haven't shown character traits of the stereotypical STEM personnel, doesn't mean you can't and won't be successful; there really is no cookie-cutter personality or path to take for success in the field of STEM. It might feel daunting at times, but don't feel discouraged and don't let others opinions discourage you. From my experience, the STEM community is incredibly supportive and you can always find help if you need it.
