When did your love of STEM begin?

My love of STEM began through playing sports. In high school I found the human body fascinating and all it was capable of in my biology and kinesiology classes. I found it amazing that by leverage certain principles and your genetics you could improve and be awesome. That interest blossomed into discovering other sciences just as chemistry and physics. Basically, it boiled down to STEM gave me the ability to understand my body and the world around me better. I used that interest and understanding to drive me to get a STEM degree and eventually end up working in a STEM field.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The best part about working in STEM is that the field is constantly changing. There are always new discoveries and ideas so you constantly get to keep learning and trying new things. I love learning and being in this field means I get to constantly learn because even the stuff I learned 2 years ago in University can be out of date. S,o you always have to learn, grow and adapt in this field and this can be a fun challenge and means that my work is never boring. I also enjoy that a lot of STEM careers can be hands on, I enjoy working in the lab and being on my feet which you don't always get to do with a regular office job.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

My advice that I would give for young women interested in STEM is don't give up when it gets hard. I found that there were some people who tried to discourage me by saying its hard. There is lots of math and memorizing, but you just have to push past it and find what you really enjoy. My other piece of advice is don't get discouraged if you don't understand every aspect or find one specific concept hard. Nobody is perfect nor do they understand everything in this huge field of study. Just find what you love and makes you excited about it and run with it and don't look back.
