When did your love of STEM begin?
I would say around middle school. I was exposed to many subjects at that time, and sciences and mathematics were the topics that interested me the most. When I reached Cegep, I was faced with a career choice to enter university, so I used my passion for calculus and algebra as well as electricity and magnetism classes to guide my choice of signing up for an electrical engineering bachelor's degree!
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
As an aspiring engineer, I find it highly motivating to know that my work has a visible and almost direct impact on our society and the environment. In fact, working in the industrial sector allowed me to gain a better understanding of industries like food and beverage, pharmaceutical, mining, transportation, etc. While I work on projects in these sectors, I can visualize the importance of highly efficient machinery to respond to the ever expanding demand on the consumer side, while maintaining high quality energy efficiency to promote a better environment for generations to come.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
Be curious! Ask lots of questions and don't be embarrassed if you don't know something. A major part of learning comes from the humility of knowing we don't know everything. This goes for all aspects of working in STEM fields. Don't hesitate to explore technical topics with your peers, like the latest news in your field, or more personal topics like how to work/life balance and mental health, or even career growth discussions. So, surround yourself with mentors and people you look up to. Your network of peers is also an invaluable source of learning!
