When did your love of STEM begin?
My love of STEM began in my Grade 11 physics class. The very first lab activity we did had to do with projectile motion; we predicted the distance a catapulted eraser would travel and were 1mm off between the predicted and demonstrated distance. We were taught that engineers used these calculated predictions to design everything from bridges to space ships! This was the first time something "clicked" inside me and I thought, "wow, wouldn't it be cool to do this sort of thing for the rest of my life?"
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
The best part about working in the field of STEM is getting to exercise creative problem-solving techniques in an environment that encourages thinking outside the box. Using the core concepts and approaches taught in the classroom to improve the world around me during my research terms and upcoming internship is very exciting and I can't wait to see where my career takes me!
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
The number one piece of advice I would give young women is to truly and whole-heartedly believe in your abilities. If you feel that STEM is right for you, do not let anybody stop you from doing amazing things. Although it may be daunting, there are lots of resources available to help you succeed, you just need to take the first step. Be the girl-boss I know you are, we are all rooting for you!
