When did your love of STEM begin?

My love started as a young child as I loved being outside and was always curious about gaining an understanding of natural phenomena. This interest developed through school as my science classes always encouraged my curiosity and really allowed me to explore concepts that I felt would give me a better understanding of the world.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

Currently as a JD/MBA student, I love learning about the ways in which the legal and business world shape tech, healthcare and other industries that rely heavily on the use of intellectual property. Having technical lab experience gives my legal and business understanding more meaning. For example, I am able to connect my new knowledge about pharmaceutical patenting and tech inventions to the technical skills I learned in during my undergrad degree when completing numerous labs. In my career, I hope to apply my foundational knowledge of science and technology in a manner that gives young girls the opportunities to create their own pathways.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

The greatest thing about a career in STEM is the numerous opportunities and avenues that become available to you. As an undergrad student, taking first year foundational science classes, I would have never imagined being in a dual law and business program. The technical skills and work ethic I developed during my undergrad were truly translative. Now, as a law and business student, I am able to blend my empirical, research skills with higher level strategic thinking. My greatest piece of advice is to never put yourself into a box. Believe in your ability to to excel, and surround yourself with other women who believe that ceilings can be shattered. And if you ever feel like you're in situation where the barriers appear to be too tough to overcome, look back on the all the obstacles you've already triumphed over and know that all that you need to achieve your goals is already within you.
