When did your love of STEM begin?

I fell in love with STEM because of my passion for horses. From an early age, I was curious as to why a horse disease called Laminitis occurred. I taught myself how to read scientific literature, printed out articles and wrote notes on the disease, and even wrote a theory as to why I thought it occurred. From then on, I knew a future in science was where I belonged. I wanted a career where I could study why diseases occurred and how we can alleviate pain and suffering and only science could provide me with that.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The freedom to question everything! What other field allows you to question what is already known, create new ideas, and then explore how we might be able to find a solution. Contrary to popular belief, STEM requires a great amount of creativity and the ability to think outside the box.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Anyone is capable of a career in STEM! You don't have to have the highest grades to have a career in STEM, but the strongest determination and passion.
