When did your love of STEM begin?
When I was in Grade 11, my uncle, who is an automotive engineer, encouraged me to participate in a 'Take Your Daughter to Work' day being held at his transmission plant. In the afternoon, he arranged for one of his interns to give me a tour of the plant floor. She showed me in the ins and outs of the machining line - the equipment, process, and technology - I was absolutely enthralled! After that day, I decided to go to University for Engineering.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
The best part about working in the field of STEM is the limitless opportunity it brings to your career. STEM fields are on the front line of advancing science and technology, you are constantly learning and growing. Working in STEM also provides diverse career opportunities, not just within typical STEM industries but in other sectors as well. For example, I am an engineer working in the accounting/professional services industry and several of my former engineering classmates migrated to education.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
Embarking on a career in STEM can be overwhelming as there are so many opportunities. Invest in meeting people currently in STEM careers, especially women. They can share their experience, help you understand different career options, and provide an insight into the journey.
