When did your love of STEM begin?

My love for STEM began in my first year of undergrad. I started my university career in a different degree program, and took a first year physics class for fun. As the semester went on, physics became by favourite course. I was excelling in the one thing I didn’t think I was smart enough to do. By the end of the semester, I knew physics was my passion. Physics is amazing. What originally sparked my drive to learn more was the idea that if I threw a ball up in the air, I would be able to calculate EXACTLY where it would land and how long it would take to get there. That fascinated me - there is a whole field of science that gives you all the information you need to understand the world around us. I switched my degree and program and am now a fourth year physics major and mathematical science major.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

The best part about working in the field of STEM is that I now have the ability and tools to share my passion. With my understanding of physics, I am able to create demos and displays that portray somewhat difficult concepts in a way that makes sense. I discovered the strength and power that lies in being able to communicate the things I know and am passionate about to those who have never heard of or learned about these things.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

In short, YOU GO GIRL! Without the contributions from the amazing women before us, the science community would not have been able to make as many advancements. STEM needs women. You ARE smart enough, you ARE capable, and you ARE valuable.
