When did your love of STEM begin?
I have always been a STEM girl. It was never an option for me to be in a field other than STEM. But my love of STEM grew and became stronger when I started my undergrad in Engineering. I quickly joined the Women in Engineering team at Concordia University as a Director of Outreach where my role was to plan different events throughout the year to network and connect with young girls in high school who are about to start their college/university and are still figuring out what they want to do. I enjoyed talking to these young girls and letting them and their parents know that Engineering is not just for guys, and it does not just revolve around "getting your hands dirty". Being a woman in Engineering teaches you how to be strong and independent in a male-dominated field.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
The best part about working in the field of STEM is that you never stop learning. The field of STEM is so large and there is always something new to learn about.
You also get to work and learn from knowledgeable, smart and hard-working people. While it has always been my goal to learn from experienced people in the field of STEM, it is also my goal to mentor, guide and transfer the knowledge and experience that I have to young women to help them succeed in their careers, that's how to create a successful and inspiring environment!
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
I would tell them to GO FOR IT!
A career in STEM is a career that is rich and satisfying. It is a career that is going to make you feel like you are making a difference in the world. With the endless opportunities that you can be part of in STEM, the satisfaction you get back from that is priceless. Every day in your life, everything you encounter with your eyes, I can guarantee you that it falls in one or more of the fields of STEM.
