When did your love of STEM begin?

My love for STEM began at a young age, when I attended a workshop on creating video games at the age of 7. I fell in love with the ability to create code from scratch that executes the commands given to it. This led me to learning how to code in different languages, and attending a specialized science and technology program at school that provides an enriched curriculum experience to those interested in the STEM fields. Looking for enrichment opportunities outside of school helped fuel my passion for STEM as well, which led me to creating apps and speaking at conferences regarding my knowledge!

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

Working in STEM empowers me with the skills I need to solve issues I am passionate about. I really did not know I could be a change maker until I got into STEM. Once I realized I could code to create social change, I started to develop apps to solve global issues. For example, last year I created an app that can detect outbreaks of insect-borne diseases before they occur. This opened my eyes to the fact that being in STEM equips me with the tools to impact millions of people, and that I can be the face of change for issues I am passionate about.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Dive deeper into the topic you are passionate about. Learn as much as you can about the topic, so you are equipped with the skills to create your own projects in that field. Furthermore, you can learn a lot from experiences, so do not pass up any learning opportunities! It is also a great idea to attend networking events to meet people who are working in the career you would like to pursue, and find mentors that can help you along your journey.
