When did your love of STEM begin?

My love of STEM began young when I discovered video games. From Mario to Zelda to puzzle games - my life revolved around the newest release of the day. From there I began building the problem solving toolkit I use every day at work.

Computer Science as a career didn't occur to me until two years into my degree. I knew I was interested in Science but couldn't get my head around my selected major - microbiology. When I described my interest in gaming to a guidance councilor, she suggested I give CS a try. I tried a few development courses on for size, fell in love, and switched programs soon after.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

Solving big problems. When we first begin a project, the issues our clients are facing can sometimes seem insurmountable. By breaking big problems into small, manageable tasks, I've been able to help my clients achieve their goals. You learn something every time. There's no feeling like walking away from a project having solved a really big problem.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

Speak up! Our lives our complicated. Problem solving is our default. You may see a piece of the puzzle others are missing, and gaining the confidence to voice that opinion comes from making a habit of speaking up regularly.
