When did your love of STEM begin?
Growing up in a family of engineers, I've always been interested in problem solving. When I was little, the interest took the form of doing brain teasers as well as replicating small scientific experiments at home. The immense sense of satisfaction when a problem is solved motivates me to further pursue a degree in science. In my second summer in university, I participated in the first-ever all-women AI Summer Lab at McGill University, where I was amazed by the exceptional peers as well as inspirational women professionals in the field of AI. During one of the workshops, the speaker brought up the gender imbalance in the field of AI, where human, especially gender biases could have huge consequences. From that moment on, I was more determined than ever that I would proudly become a woman in STEM, a woman in AI.
What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?
The most rewarding part of working in STEM is the diversity. The diversity of problems you could encounter and solve, the diversity of impact you could have with your knowledge, as well as the diversity of people you would have the pleasure to connect with and learn from.
What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?
TL; DR: just go for it! Find what you’re passionate about, you’ll be joined by amazing peers along the way with whom you share your passion, and with them on board, even though it could get hard sometimes, it’ll be a fun ride!
