When did your love of STEM begin?

I was always an inquisitive child, and so naturally loved science and math from a young age. I participated in local science fairs and competed in math competitions. My love of STEM skyrocketed further when I reached high school and was taught by some very passionate science and math teachers. I was fortunate to be able to attend SHAD at Queen's University, a summer camp focused on STEM and entrepreneurship, as well as to tour the Experimental Lakes Area research facility as a teenager. These opportunities for interaction with scientists opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in STEM, and the rest was history.

What is the best part about working in the field of STEM?

There's never a dull moment! The world around us is always changing, as are the discoveries that scientists are making across the globe. With these new discoveries comes new ways to apply my knowledge to help understand and solve problems at a more local level. It is incredibly rewarding to face new challenges and questions every single day, and to collaborate with others to help find solutions for community issues.

What advice would you give young women interested in a career in STEM?

It can be hard, discouraging, and intimidating at times - a career in STEM doesn't come without grit, determination, and hard work. But it is SO worth it! Hold your head high and keep moving forward with confidence, one day at a time.
