Meet Meghana Valupadas

Meghana Valupadas is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering with Co-op from the University of Alberta. In her spare time, she likes to bake, read, volunteer, hairbrush karaoke, run in the river valley, cosplay, and physical activities like hiking, jogging, etc.

When did your love of STEM begin?

My love for STEM began in elementary when I found myself excited by interesting rocks and intrigued by creatures in the ocean. As I got older I began to appreciate the work that people in STEM do to share amazing discoveries with the public and come up with incredible solutions to global issues. I also knew that I wanted to be a part of that kind of work.

What did you love most about study in your field of STEM?

The best part about working in the field of STEM is the chance to make changes that provide opportunities for other people. I lead the creation of the group Diversity in Engineering (DivE) to bring more of a focus to traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM through policy advisory, program creation, and advocacy. Being a part of STEM and groups like DivE allow me to be a part of something so much bigger than myself and my career. I have the chance to not only create technology, but also build a better world for generations to come.

What advice would you give to young women considering a career in STEM?

The biggest piece of advice that I would give to young women interested in a career in STEM is that their perspective is the most valuable thing that they can bring to this field. When I was younger I was always worried about not being looking enough like a scientist or acting enough like a scientist. Have confidence in your skills and who you are. You are smart enough, you are bold enough, and you will change the world!
